Hungary's population decline slowed, number of marriages increased in 2016

The decline in births and the even greater drop in the death rate means that the rate of natural population decline was down by 25.4 percent

Hungary’s population decline has slowed despite the number of births being lower, according to reports.

According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), both the number of births and the number of deaths decreased during the first seven months of the year compared with the same period in 2015.

The figures show that there were 51,882 births in January-July, a 1.4 percent drop from the same period a year earlier. The number of deaths was 72,477, down by 9.7 percent compared with 2015.

The decline in births and the even greater drop in the death rate means that the rate of natural population decline was down by 25.4 percent compared with the same period in 2015.

The number of marriages went up by an annual 17 percent to 28,714.
