Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Facebook on Wednesday that the Hungarian government has received the European Commission’s latest annual report on the state of the rule of law in member states “calmly” and “retained its position to continue a professional dialogue” even in the “single fire it is well accustomed to”.
Minister Varga said the report was based on “uncertain indicators, biased NGOs and prejudices similarly to previous years” but welcomed that the government’s talks with the commission “are now focused on solutions rather than the problems”. “We will retain our most fundamental approach: honesty,” she said adding that “we have talked about the problems in a straightforward manner and now we are straightforward about the solutions, too”. The European Parliament, however, has decided to “remain part of the problem rather than of the solution as its LIBE commission passed the report by Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield” proposing to cut EU funds to Hungary, Minister Varga said. The report “echoes the left’s accusations without regard to facts and professional arguments”, which she said cast doubt on the professionalism of LIBE and the report’s author.
