Liberty Bridge to become a pedestrian-only zone during summer weekends

Liberty Bridge will become a pedestrian-only zone between June 17th and 18th, 24th and 25th, August 5th and 6th, and 12th and 13th

Budapest City Council has announced that the Liberty Bridge (Szabadság Híd) will be closed to automobile and tram traffic on certain weekends during the summer.

Liberty Bridge will become a pedestrian-only zone between June 17th and 18th, 24th and 25th, August 5th and 6th, and 12th and 13th.

Official plans and proposals were drawn up so that tourists and residents can enjoy picnics and summer evenings on the bridge.

Last summer, the bridge was open only to pedestrians due to tram line renovations and became an extremely popular hangout spot.

The city’s shortest crossing over the river Danube become a hub of activity, from open-air picnics to parties and revelry.

Budapest Mayor István Tarlós said that “this is a gesture we can make to the youth", after agreeing with calls from many groups to open up the bridge as a pedestrian-only space.
