The Magyar Művészeti Akadémia Művészetelméleti és Módszertani Kutatóintézet (MMA-MMKI), or the Centre for Research in Hungarian Art Education and Theory, has launched a new website that puts Hungarian contemporary literature into the spotlight.
The MMA Lexicon celebrates the literary masterpieces written in the past six decades, promoting the work of lesser-known, Transylvania, Upper Hungary and Zakarpattia Oblast-born writers.
Insisting on easy-to-read works that won't trigger conflict between visitors, the curators chose pieces lacking affiliation to political trends or groups. Organizers said it was vital to only include works that contain no allusions or explicit references to any ideologies.
The MMA Lexicon is the first website to address a general, non-academic audience. To draw in everyday people - as opposed to tenured professors and highly-educated specialists - the project challenges the conventions of the compulsory educational framework and includes lesser-known, miscellaneous texts.
The Lexicon currently showcases the work of Sandor Marai, Benedek Kis and Gyorgy Spiro, alongside names ranging from Istvan Szilagyi to Zsuzsa Vathy and Imre Oravecz.
The research project began in 2018 and is set to be completed by 2021, by which point they plan to have catalogued 800 articles representing the diverse trends that emerged in the Hungarian literary sphere over the past sixty years.
