In 2016 alone, more than 17,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the Hungarian section of Europe's external Schengen border, it has been revealed.
In total, 17,008 illegal border crossings had been recorded up until yesterday.
According to a chart published on the Hungarian police website, this number was 64,770 at the same time last year, and 6,484 the previous year.
On Tuesday, 157 people were apprehended for illegal border crossings. In the past 24 hours, police have prevented 119 people from illegally crossing the Hungarian-Serbian border.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spent the day in Brussels for talks with both the V4 countries and EU member states at the EU summit.
The prime minister's main agenda is to discuss the migrant crisis and how Hungary and other European countries will deal with it.
