Tamás Schanda, state secretary at the ministry of Innovation and Technology, has confirmed that there are plans for a new high-speed railway line connecting Budapest Airport to downtown of the Hungarian capital.
Schanda said the plans are already finished, they have the necessary permissions granted and construction will begin in 2021.
The state secretary added that since building a new railway line is very expensive, the government is planning to find a budget for it in the EU’s 2021-2027 financial aid program allocated for the development of public transport.
Schanda highlighted that traffic at Budapest Airport has doubled since 2010, and Liszt Ferenc International Airport welcomed more than 16 million passengers in 2019. Therefore, he said, the ever-growing number of passengers demand a fast, comfortable, and environmentally friendly transport link between the airport and downtown Budapest.
There are currently two tenders in consideration to undertake the project and a decision will be made in due course.
