Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a post on Facebook on Monday that a massive storm had hit Hungary, with most of the damage concentrated around northern Hungary, Lake Balaton, in and around Buda and in the Great Plain, adding that hundreds of thousands of households were experiencing power outages.
PM Orbán said the government had consulted the heads of various authorities working on restoring power and services.
Disaster management staff, firefighters, railway and road workers and electricity companies "will be working all night and tomorrow" to remove obstacles on rail tracks and roads, to restore public services and ensure the conditions for the resumption of public transport services, he wrote.
