PM Orbán: The war in Ukraine has taken a worrying new turn

The prime minister said that despite US President Donald Trump's best efforts, "we are not exiting the war but going into it".

After a meeting of Hungary's Defense Council, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the war in Ukraine has taken a worrying new turn, adding that despite US President Donald Trump's best efforts, "we are not exiting the war but going into it".

"Brussels bureaucrats don't support America's peace plans," PM Orbán said in a video posted on his social media page late on Monday. "They have decided that Ukraine should continue the war. Hungary opposes this ... and supports American peace efforts," he added.

PM Orbán said "the Brussels leadership" would put Hungary under enormous pressure to join the pro-war European coalition, and Hungary would resist this.

The prime minister also referred to "secret service operations against Hungary and smear campaigns financed from abroad", which he said would intensify.

PM Orbán said the Defense Council had made "necessary decisions" in the interests of the country's security. He added: "We will continue to defend Hungary's sovereignty and the security of Hungarian families!"
