President Tamás Sulyok has nominated Imre Juhász, retired head of the Constitutional Court, as the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights. The position has been vacant since Ákos Kozma, the former ombudsman, was appointed as a constitutional judge last month.
According to the statement from the presidential Sándor Palace, Juhász has broad legal and judicial experience. He was a founder of the Civil Lawyers Committee in 2006, and represented Hungary in the Council of Europe's Committee against Racism and Intolerance from 2013. He was also a board member of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency between 2015 and 2019. He was elected constitutional judge in 2013 and headed the top court from 2024.
