Rio 2016: Hungary wins two gold medals at Olympic Games over weekend

Hungary are currently ranked sixth overall on the Olympic Games medal table after golds in swimming and fencing

As of Monday morning, Hungary are ranked sixth on the Olympic Games medal table after winning two gold medals over the weekend.

Katinka Hosszu ended her long quest for Olympic gold by taking home the win in the 400m individual medley in the swimming.

While, Emese Szasz bounced back from a first-match loss in London to beat Italy's twice world champion Rossella Fiamingo to win gold in the fencing category.

Hungary is represented by 160 sportsmen and women at this year's summer Olymics in Rio, and the team are tipped to win a lot more medals over the course of the games.

Meanwhile, President János Áder, present at the opening ceremony on Friday, said the achievements of Hungarian athletes in previous Olympics have entitled the country to submit its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Summer Games. Hungary should be considered to host the Games in 2024 not only because of its traditions and results, but also because it is the only country among the top ten medal winners that has not hosted any Olympics yet, the President said.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach are scheduled to jointly visit the facility on August 19, and the prime minister is due to attend the closing ceremony.
