Romania’s PM: The time has come to “shift the emphasis” in Hungarian-Romanian ties and focus on things that bind the two nations together

Romania’s prime minister has declared that the time has come to “shift the emphasis” in Hungarian-Romanian ties and focus on things that bind the two nations together.

Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă made the announcement while addressing Hungary on the anniversary of the country’s anti-Habsburg revolution of 1848.

She said that Hungary and Romania should focus on things that advance human and cultural relations, a joint European perspective and the representation of the two peoples’ customs and traditions.

Dăncilă added that the national holiday is a good time to celebrate Romania’s ethnic Hungarians and the peaceful coexistence they have achieved with Romanians over the past decades.

Today, the differences among Europe’s various ethnicities and cultures should be the source of mutual understanding and respect, she said. Therefore, Romania follows the European principle of “unity in diversity” and is a committed supporter of the free expression of ethnic identity and the nurturing of elements of cultural and linguistic identity, she added.
