Tristan Azbej, the state secretary for programs to help persecuted Christians at the foreign ministry, said Hungary works for the stability and peace of the Middle East region.
Azbej said the French foreign ministry had organized a high-level international conference on the Lebanon conflict and to offer aid to the country. The event was opened by French President Emmanuel Macron, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and was attended by several foreign ministers and international officials, he added.
"Representing Hungary, I stressed that we are dedicated to the prevention of a further regional escalation of the conflict," he said. "I highlighted the need to strengthen and support the Lebanese authorities, and to promote the safe return home of Syrian refugees who have caused serious tensions for a long time," he added.
The safety of innocent civilians and the return of internally displaced people to their homes are important goals on all sides, he said. Simultaneously, all efforts are needed to get the Hamas terrorist organization to release the Israeli hostages, he added.
"I announced at the conference that in recent weeks Hungary contributed to helping Lebanese civilians who had been injured and forced to leave their homes as a result of the escalation of the conflict with 124,000 dollars' worth of donations," he said. "This aid will be delivered to those in need with the help of Christian organisations, and we are organising further humanitarian actions in the near future," he added.
