Marking the 30th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty, Katalin Szili, the prime minister’s commissioner for minority rights, has called for legislation to be drafted by the European Commission on national minorities.
Szili said in a statement that among other things, the treaty defines the concept of European citizen and serves as a reference point for every civil initiative, including the Minority SafePack and protecting national regions. “Today the Maastricht Treaty unites 440 million European citizens … Fifty million of these belong to a national minority,” she said, adding that the document must serve as a guarantee for Hungarians beyond the borders to “preserve their identity and thrive in their homeland.” “Our case requires a Community act be drafted by the European Commission,” she said, adding that it would be “a shame” if this were delayed.
