Taxi fares will jump when new rules come into effect this summer

Zoltán Metál, president of the Hungarian Taxi Association, said that he believes the reason why it is so hard to get a taxi in Budapest today is because of the greater demand on the taxi market – not the prices!

Budapest taxis will increase signficiantly -- some fares nearly doubling -- when new rules come into effect this summer, it has been revealed.

According to index.hu, the Budapest assembly has voted to increase Hungarian taxi fares from July after 82 percent of drivers supported the decision.

The current 450 HUF base rate will increase 55 percent to 700 HUF, the kilometer fare will rise to 300 HUF from 280 HUF and waiting time will cost 75 HUF per minute.

Reports state that drivers have more expenses now compared to five years ago when the current taxi fares were agreed.

Zoltán Metál, president of the Hungarian Taxi Association, said they agreed on the final rate of increase after much negotiation.
