The UK will continue to remain on close terms with Hungary following Brexit, Iain Lindsay, the British ambassador to Hungary, has said.

Upon Brexit, Great Britain will continue to build relations with its European partners, among them Hungary, Lindsay told the Hungarian parliament’s European Affairs Committee.

Britain will build its own model for exiting the European Union and the British government is preparing negotiations with attention to every detail, he said.

Richárd Horcsik, the head of the committee and a delegate of the ruling Fidesz party, said a strong ally in the EU will be lost for Hungary with Brexit, but relations with Britain are expected to remain strong. Hungary regrets the British decision but respects it, he said.

Zsolt Legény of the opposition Socialists asked the ambassador about the situation of Hungarians working in the UK and Lindsay responded that British Prime Minister Theresa May wants to guarantee the rights of EU citizens in Britain, while she expects that the rights of British citizens will likewise be protected in EU member states.
