It has been revealed that 442 illegal immigrants were arrested in Hungary over the weekend, bringing the average monthly totals into the thousands.
The National Police Headquarters has announced via MTI that between Friday and Sunday 442 people crossing the border illegally were apprehended in Hungary, proceedings for people smuggling were launched in four cases.
According to the statistics published on the official website of the Hungarian Police, 201 were apprehended on Friday, 84 on Saturday, and 157 on Sunday.
During the first weeks of the year, the number of migrants crossing Hungary’s borders illegally averaged around ten, in February, March and April however, there were a number of days on which over 200 people were apprehended. The trend peaked on Easter Monday with 255 cases.
Between Monday and Sunday, Police apprehended 907 people for illegal border crossing; one week earlier – from June 6 to 12 – the number of cases reached 853.
According to information on criminal offences related to migration from the Prosecutor’s Office and the Court the composition of migrants in terms of citizenship is very diverse. Many claim themselves to be Afghani, Syrian or Pakistani citizens, or nationals of one of the North African countries, but migrants also arrive from more distant places like Haiti or Sri Lanka.
