Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin today.
On the top of the discussion agenda will be the so-called German migrant agreement that has been put before 14 countries by the Chancellor.
PM Orbán will today outline the country’s position on migration and make it clear that Hungary will not conclude any bilateral agreement on migrants with Germany until an agreement is reached between Austria and Germany.
Hungary’s position on the issue of migration has remained unchanged since 2015. The prime minister recently told Chancellor Kurz that no asylum seekers have made their initial entry to Europe in Hungary, because the migrants’ mainland migration routes – the Balkan routes – lead through Greece or Bulgaria, with most illegal immigrants arriving on the continent in Greece.
PM Orbán previously denied that Hungary was part of a group of 14 countries that were ready to sign a deal with Germany on speeding up the re-admittance process of asylum seekers deported from Germany.
Reports suggest that German Chancellor Angela Merkel outlined a number of measures related to illegal migrants, and Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic were among 14 countries ready to sign an agreement alongside Belgium, France, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden.
The bilateral agreements would facilitate the return process for asylum seekers who have previously been registered in other countries.
The prime minister has also made it clear that Hungary is unable and is unwilling to receive anyone but is ready at any time to help with transporting illegal immigrants back to Greece.
