Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after a meeting of the Defence Council

20 November 2024, Budapest

It is Wednesday morning. There is bad news from the war in Ukraine, so I called a meeting of the Defence Council. We are facing the most dangerous two months of the war. President Trump's victory has brought peace – or at least a ceasefire – within reach. But the pro-war government is still in power in the United States for another two months. What this means in practice is that yesterday the Ukrainians fired long-range missiles into Russian territory, and the Russians responded by adopting a tougher nuclear doctrine. I have heard the Defence Council’s report. Never before has there been such an escalation, such a threat of the war expanding. In the weeks and months to come, Hungary will need all its knowledge, all its tools, all our diplomatic experience to continue to stay out of this war – because Hungary must continue to stay out of this war.
