Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after a meeting of the Defence Council

22 June 2025, Budapest

The Defence Council meeting has just ended, which I convened because with last night’s US bombing the Iran–Israel war has entered a new phase. Although geographically far from us, the conflict presents us with three dangers, three threats to face. First, the threat of terrorism. We’ve defended ourselves against migration, so we’re not an immigrant country; so now we’ll also be able to defend ourselves effectively against the threat of terrorism. We must be alert to migration pressures, as every conflict in the Middle East increases the pressure on our southern borders. The Interior Minister must be alert to this, and today I’ve instructed him. And finally we must face up to a further rise in the price of energy. This is a serious threat, and this is why in Brussels we now need to lift the regulations and bans on Russian energy, as the Iran–Israel war’s negative impact on energy supplies will be bad enough as it is.
