In 2022, South Korea was Hungary’s largest investor, while 130 Korean companies ensure the livelihood of 15,000 Hungarian families.
The prime minister met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO summit in Vilnius on Tuesday.
South Korean companies formed the biggest group of investors in Hungary last year, ploughing around 1,100 billion forints (EUR 3bn) into the country.
The prime minister noted that South Korea “showed trust” in Hungary’s economy right after the regime change in 1989.
In 2019 and 2021, South Korea was the largest foreign investor in Hungary, with investments worth more than 6.8 billion US dollars in 2020.
Levente Magyar, the foreign ministry’s parliamentary state secretary, said Hungary counts on South Korea as a partner in shifting its labor-intensive economy to a knowledge-intensive economy.
Minister Szijjártó qualified the structure of FDI as “healthy”, with 48% of the investment coming from the East, and 42% from the West. Hungarian investments account for about 10% of the total.
Minister Varga said all South Korean investments help Hungary evade the economic recession emerging on the back of the sanctions-fuelled crisis.
South Korea has become one of the largest investors in Hungary, with the three largest investment projects of the past years coming to Hungary from South Korea.
Hungary and the Republic of Korea have signed agreements on expanding the number of direct flights between their capitals, Hungarian food exports and Korean language teaching in Hungary.
Trade turnover between the V4 and South Korea even increased “in the black year for the global economy that was 2020”, reaching 20 billion US dollars for the first time.
PM Orbán said his government had looked to South Korea as a “success story” to learn from when it returned to power in 2010.
