Gergely Gulyás said the Hungarian government’s aim had been clear throughout the talks: the EU support must not be made conditional on rule-of-law criteria.
Brussels is not able to blackmail Hungary with money, there is no new weapon against us.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Polish counterpart, Mateusz Morawiecki, said in a joint declaration that EU budget conditionality would weaken, not strengthen the rule of law in the EU.
“I can’t risk having positions forced on Hungary that the Hungarian people would disapprove of,” the prime minister said.
After his one-day visit to Hungary, Polish Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed a joint press conference on the Hungarian-Polish veto on the Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Union and the Next Generation recovery fund. The two heads of government also signed a common statement on their position.
