The foreign minister stated that despite all efforts, the threat terrorism poses globally is currently more serious than ever before, with various terrorist attacks claiming 6,700 lives last year.
The Budapest office will be assigned more and more functions including a program implemented in cooperation with the Balkans to thwart terrorism financing.
The 21-year-old suspect had been making preparations for attacks such as exploding bombs at mass events or driving into crowds.
Minister Szijjártó said the new office will be tasked with coordinating the fight against terrorism in the region. He noted that Hungary already hosts the regional headquarters of several specialized UN organizations.
