The European Union must establish a “new kind of partnership” with Turkey both in terms of economic cooperation and their joint handling of migration.

Speaking at the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on Monday, Olivér Várhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, said that in order to maintain its credibility, the EU must “speed up” accession for the Western Balkans and “make it more dynamic.”

State Secretary Zoltán Kovács has highlighted how Hungarian opposition MEPs have failed in their “shameful and hostile” attack to derail Olivér Várhelyi’s candidacy for the post of Hungary’s EU commissioner.
“The government welcomes that the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee has supported Várhelyi’s appointment as European commissioner,” the Government Information Center said in a statement.
Olivér Várhelyi will take up the Enlargement and Neighborhood portfolio in the Commission of Ursula von der Leyen, which is expected to take office December 1.
Olivér Várhelyi's only objective is “to represent the European Union’s political priorities towards our enlargement and neighborhood partners and to work in a genuine European spirit in the Western Balkans, as well as in the relationship with our Eastern and Southern neighbors.”
