The president assured the community that “we are with them in our thoughts, words and prayers every day, especially at Christmas time.”
"The peoples of Transcarpathia “have lived peacefully together for a thousand years and I will do everything that it does not change in future,” Gergely Gulyás said.
Aid worth 30 million forints (EUR 80,860) will be delivered to Ukraine and the rest provided for refugees staying in Hungary.
Péter Szilágyi said the relationship between the diaspora and Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin was deepening thanks to the work of the past years.
The Hungarian government had used some 130 billion forints (EUR 334m) since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine to help the war’s victims.
The president has underlined the need to support those fleeing the war in Ukraine and those who have stayed in the country.
Minister Szijjártó said NATO’s plans to convene a ministerial-level meeting of the NATO-Ukraine committee undermined NATO unity.
“This is a burning issue as a recent Ukrainian law will in fact eliminate ethnic minority schools in that country,” Minister Szijjártó said.
The president said ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia know the meaning of survival and struggle.
Hungary is again helping Ukraine with the fight against coronavirus through a donation of 120 ventilators, half of which will be set up in hospitals in Transcarpathia.
The leader of the Trancarpathian Hungarian cultural association KMKSZ said Ukrainian-Hungarian relations and the situation of the region’s Hungarian community had taken a worrying turn.
“We hope the situation will soon be settled in Transcarpathia,” Tamás Schanda said.
