Europe must change, Minister for European Union Affairs János Bóka declared on Tuesday in a statement on social media following his remarks at the European Forum Alpbach.
The minister wrote that the EU is facing more crises and challenges than ever before as a result of flawed decisions by its current leadership. He described a “complex, interwoven network of crises,” highlighting issues of competitiveness and security. “If we lose global weight, we will be less able to enforce our interests in the world,” he warned.
Bóka underlined that the EU’s strength lies in its economic potential, which will weaken without improving competitiveness. “We are entering a downward spiral where both our security and prosperity are at risk,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of European unity but rejected the idea that it could be achieved through the erosion of national sovereignty, censorship of opinions, centralization, or an overreaching Brussels bureaucracy. No scapegoating or manufactured enemy, he added, can replace sound strategy.
“The crises we face, and how we resolve them, will shape not only today’s but also future generations’ Europe. Strategic mistakes cast a long shadow,” he noted, stressing that the current Brussels leadership has failed to make the right decisions. “Change is needed,” Bóka concluded.
