Cardinal Parolin meets Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, reaffirms commitment to peace

President Zelenskyy has had multiple interactions with Pope Francis over the years, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between Ukraine and the Vatican. Their last in-person meeting was on June 14, 2024, during the G7 summit in southern Italy. Prior to that, they met on December 28, 2023, during a phone conversation where they discussed a "just peace" and the Vatican's support for Zelenskyy's peace plan.

Their relationship dates back to May 13, 2020, with their first meeting, and was further strengthened by a conversation on February 26, 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. Zelenskyy has consistently expressed gratitude for the Pope's spiritual support and the Vatican's mediation efforts.

During the recent meeting, President Zelenskyy awarded Cardinal Parolin the Order of Merit. This honor acknowledges the Cardinal's significant role in enhancing bilateral relations and his unwavering support during Ukraine's challenging times. Zelenskyy praised the Cardinal's exceptional contributions to peace and stability in the region.
