Csaba Dömötör: The EU-Mercosur Agreement was put together by Péter Magyar’s Brussels party

Csaba Dömötör, a Fidesz member of the European Parliament, sharply criticized Péter Magyar, president of the Tisza Party, in a Facebook post on Tuesday over the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement.

According to MEP Dömötör, Péter Magyar has accused the Hungarian government of failing to protect farmers from the Mercosur agreement. Dömötör said this claim is misleading, arguing that responsibility for the deal lies with Magyar’s own political allies in Brussels.

“This is like saying we failed to protect Judit Varga from her husband wiretapping her,” Dömötör wrote, using the comparison to underline what he described as the absurdity of the accusation.

The Fidesz MEP stated that the EU-Mercosur agreement was negotiated and finalized by Péter Magyar’s political family in Brussels, the European People’s Party (EPP). He noted that EPP politicians have openly welcomed the agreement and have pledged to vote in favor of it.

“In contrast, the Hungarian government vetoed the agreement,” Dömötör emphasized, adding that Hungary has consistently opposed trade arrangements that would expose European and Hungarian farmers to unfair competition from outside the European Union.

Dömötör Csaba argued that no amount of carefully staged photographs or public appearances could conceal what he described as the political reality behind the agreement.

“There are not enough thousands of staged, posed photos that could cover up this lie,” the MEP wrote, concluding that Péter Magyar’s criticism of the government is incompatible with the voting behavior and political alliances of his own party at the European level.

The EU-Mercosur agreement has sparked widespread protests by farmers across Europe, who argue that the deal would undermine agricultural production, food safety, and livelihoods within the European Union.
