Deutsch: EU institutions have become mafia-like operations

Patriots for Europe group finds it unacceptable that the European Commission and the European Parliament "seek to suppress the largest corruption scandals in the EU's history".

Tamás Deutsch, MEP of Hungary's ruling Fidesz, said the European Parliament's Patriots for Europe group finds it unacceptable that the European Commission and the European Parliament "seek to suppress the largest corruption scandals in the EU's history".

Referring to the EC's 2023 anti-fraud report and draft reports by the EP, Deutsch said that "while Brussels bureaucrats have stressed the importance of fighting corruption for years, EU institutions have become pervaded by systemic corruption and mafia-like operation".

"Amid reports of suitcases stuffed with tens of thousands of euros, orders placed in text messages for vaccines worth billions of euros and the former EU commissioner prosecuted under suspicion of money laundering ... the report on the activities of the EP does not even mention ... the case of Eva Kaili and her accomplices," Deutsch said.

Deutsch said the Patriots had submitted an amendment to the draft report to adopt stricter internal regulations concerning graft and launch a "meaningful" fact-finding probe "to prevent similar corruption cases from occurring in the future."
