Deutsch: Standing up for national interests is the right thing to do

Deutsch called the agreement reached at this week’s EU summit in Brussels a “joint European achievement”.

Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch said the success of Hungary and Poland’s alliance in the negotiations on the European Union’s next multiannual budget and coronavirus recovery fund demonstrates that standing up for national interests is not only the right thing to do but that it can also yield results.

“The Hungarian left-wing politicians seeking to harm our country are forced to endure tough days now that an agreement … has been reached,” Deutsch told public broadcaster Kossuth Radio. “Hungary’s left-wing MEPs who spent all their energy on trying to harm Hungary, deprive the Hungarian people of EU funds and blackmail the country with arbitrary conditions for bogus reasons have been exposed.”

According to MTI, Deutsch called the agreement reached at this week’s EU summit in Brussels a “joint European achievement” and said it would prevent the more powerful member states from being able to “force their will” onto the smaller ones. The deal, he said, would also provide a guarantee for national sovereignty, arguing that it had become clear that the key to the bloc’s success lay in successful nation-states rather than aspirations to create a “united states of Europe”.

Deutsch said he was convinced that the European Parliament would approve the European Council’s resolution next week, adding, however, that “there’ll probably be some whining” given that “the European left won’t be able to accept the loss with their heads held high”. The MEP noted that the next seven-year budget and the post-pandemic recovery package will give Hungary access to 40 billion euros in EU funds and 10 billion euros in credit.
