Hungary’s foreign minister will be joined by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell in Paris on Wednesday to hold talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
According to MTI, the talks are “an extraordinary Hungarian-Ukrainian-American trilateral meeting” to discuss the Ukraine Education Act.
Tamás Menczer, deputy state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the meeting will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Paris, and Minister Szijjártó’s delegation will include President of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association László Brenzovics.
The deputy state secretary confirmed that the main topic of discussion at the meeting will be the Ukrainian Education Act, which “fundamentally reduces the rights of minorities”.
Reports state that Hungary’s foreign minister met with László Brenzovics in Budapest last week and determined that the most effective way of easing the situation would be to amend the relative piece of legislation. However, the Ukrainian government has not entered into negotiations with either the Hungarian government or Transcarpathian Hungarians since the Venice Commission issued its opinion on the matter, he added.
Minister Szijjártó and Wess Mitchel held bilateral talks in Washington last week and agreed that a solution to the problem must be found at the earliest opportunity. He said it was as a result of those talks that Wednesday’s trilateral meeting had been organized.
