The foreign minister has said that Europe needs new leaders that recognize the interests of European people and can protect them.
Péter Szíjjártó made the remarks in response to recent comments made by Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission.
In an interview with Berliner Morgenpost, Juncker said the European Commission will launch a fight against fake news that could impact the upcoming European elections. He mentioned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as one spreading fake news.
“The Hungarian government says I am to be blamed for the East-West divide in Europe – whereas the Commission has done everything to close this gap,” Juncker said.
“European people don’t need to be steered, this is contemptuous,” Minister Szíjjártó said in a statement to national news agency MTI. “Europeans know exactly what they want and will make their opinion clear at the May elections.”
The minister added that on the other hand, Juncker has failed as a leader as he was unable to keep the United Kingdom in the European Union and migrants out of it.
