FM: Hungary supports African expert to head International Fund for Agricultural Development

The foreign minister said the war in Ukraine had serious ramifications beyond Europe, noting that Ukraine and Russia are among the world’s largest grain exporters.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said Hungary is ready to support the nomination of an expert from Africa to head the International Fund for Agricultural Development, an agency of the United Nations.

Minister Szijjártó had talks with Raychelle Omamo, his Kenyan counterpart, her government’s nominee for the IFAD post. Referring to an impending food crisis in Africa, he said the war in Ukraine had serious ramifications beyond Europe, noting that Ukraine and Russia are among the world’s largest grain exporters. “Many African countries require extremely rapid developments in agriculture and their food industry, so it would be good if the nominee of an African country filled this important position,” Minister Szijjártó said.
