FM: Incidents against ethnic Hungarians in Romania are unacceptable

"We consider these incidents unacceptable and most resolutely condemn them," the foreign minister said.

"We consider incidents against ethnic Hungarians in Romania unacceptable and condemn them in the strongest possible terms", the foreign minister said on Friday.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Facebook after talks with his Romanian counterpart Emil Hurezeanu that two football-related incidents had involved ethnic Hungarians in Romania earlier this week.

After a match between two teams from Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvar), Hungarian youth were assaulted in the city's main square, he said. In Miercurea Ciuc (Csikszereda) anti-Hungarian slogans were chanted during the entire match played against the guest team from Steaua, Minister Szijjártó added.

"We consider these incidents unacceptable and most resolutely condemn them," he said.

Minister Szijjártó said that on Friday he held consultations by phone with his Romanian counterpart and they had been in agreement that these incidents should be taken seriously and treated with the seriousness they deserve.

"My colleague assured me that the Romanian authorities are doing their utmost to catch and punish the perpetrators," he said.

He added that they were in agreement on the need to prevent a recurrence of such acts by all possible means and prevent extremist people and groupings from destroying the improving relations between the two countries.
