FM: Respect to the heroes of the freedom fight

The foreign minister said that no matter where Hungarians went in the world, they were received with "love and concern".

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Wednesday that "the last century showed Hungarians with cruel brutality what life is like in a world fragmented into blocs".

Minister Szijjártó said on Facebook that "one bloc trampled on our fight for freedom and sovereignty, while the other looked on idly."

"But people all around the world watched the events unfolding in Budapest with sympathy and concern for the freedom fighters, and they were united in rooting for the success of the freedom fighters," Minister Szijjártó said, adding that no matter where Hungarians went in the world, they were received with "love and concern".

Minister Szijjártó said that as a result, the matches of the BP Honved soccer team in western Europe in November 1956 transformed into solidarity demonstrations, with the players wearing bereavement ribbons paying tribute to the heroes of the freedom fight.

"Respect to the heroes of the freedom fight," Minister Szijjártó said.
