Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the second phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas could offer a chance for the release of a hostage with Hungarian citizenship.
In a statement released by his ministry, Minister Szijjártó said the possible release hinged on the completion of the first phase of the deal.
The foreign minister added that a planned visit to Budapest by his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar, had been postponed, but the sides had spoken about the deal by phone on Saturday.
Minister Szijjártó welcomed the ceasefire agreement that will see the release of 33 hostages in its first phase and acknowledged the commitment of the Israeli government and the work of mediators, pointing to the impact on Europe and the world of security in the Middle East.
Women, older men and the sick are to be released in the first phase of the deal. The Hungarian national held hostage is a young man.
