Three Hungarian cakes have made it onto CNN's prestigious ‘50 of the world’s best desserts’ list.
The list includes a long-favored, household classic, the Kifli, alongside the Eszterházy Torta and the Rigó Jancsi.
An extremely popular concoction to be served at gatherings and smaller events, the Kifli is a favorite among home bakers and beyond. A no-nonsense, simple bake made by spreading a generous portion of apricot or plum jam across long sheets of puff pastry, before being rolled up into the classic, twisted, horn-like shape.
The Eszterházy Torta and the Rigó Jancsi pose a much more difficult challenge to the average dessert fiend. The Torta is a Hungarian spin on the traditional French Opera cake, comprising of five to six razor-thin slices of sponge covered with a walnut and cream mixture and decorated with a standard, black-and-white, web-like pattern.
In comparison, the Rigó Jancsi comprises of just four layers. A fluffy, airy chocolate cake is covered with a dense, rich chocolate mousse, and decorated with a smooth fondant for a mirror-like glaze.
