Hungarians welcomed to submit plans for a new WWI memorial

Artists, architects and members of the public invited to submit plans for a World War I memorial

The government is inviting artists, architects and members of the public to submit plans for a World War I memorial in Budapest.

Internet users are also welcome to make suggestions for a location to erect the monument, which will be decided within the next two weeks.

Designs and plans can be viewed and submitted here.

The memorial is planned to commemorate over 660,000 Hungarian soldiers who lost their lives in the first world war, twice as many as in the second. "Those who sacrificed their lives for the nation are entitled to the nation's tribute and remembrance, " said Bence Retvari.

Maria Schmidt, head of the 20th Century Institute, said that the monument could be erected "in the next one or two years".
