The Hungarian government has extended its condolonces to the victims of the rail accident in Italy, it has been confirmed.

A statement released by the government expressed its deep shock and regret at the tragic loss of life in the train crash near Bari, July 12.

"We extend our sympathies to the relatives of those who died in the accident and we wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured," the statement read.

Yesterday, two passenger trains collided head-on in the Puglia region of southern Italy, killing at least 23 people and injuring dozens more, some of them critically.

The crash occurred in the morning at around 11:30 on a single track running through an olive grove between the towns of Corato and Ruvo di Puglia.
