Hungary vows to help Greece amid rising migrant pressure

Hungary has offered to send a 65-strong border guard unit to Greece within the framework of an operation by the EU’s border agency Frontex.

Hungary’s interior minister said a declaration approved by the European Union’s interior ministers in Brussels on Wednesday states that the bloc’s external borders must be protected under all circumstances.

Sándor Pintér noted that the Greek government had turned to the EU for help as migration pressure on the Greek-Turkish border intensifies.

According to MTI, Pintér said Hungary has offered to send a 65-strong border guard unit to Greece within the framework of an operation by the EU’s border agency Frontex.

The minister also said the bloc’s interior ministers had voted at the meeting to provide immediate financial assistance of EUR 350 million to Greece and, if necessary, an additional EUR 350 million package.
