Nearly 2.8 million guests spent 7.3 million nights at commercial, private, and other accommodations across the country. Seasonally adjusted figures show an even stronger rise, with guest numbers up 7.9 percent and guest nights up 4.6 percent from August 2024.
Foreign arrivals were the main driver, climbing 10 percent year-on-year, while the nights they spent rose by 8.4 percent. A total of 1.3 million international visitors accounted for close to 3.4 million guest nights, most of them in hotels, where their numbers increased by 7 percent. Private and other accommodations reported a 14 percent surge. Budapest and its surroundings saw the strongest growth, with international guests up 22 percent, while numbers rose 19 percent in Szeged.
Domestic tourism was more subdued, with 1.5 million Hungarians spending 3.9 million nights at tourist accommodations. Although the number of domestic guests rose slightly by 1 percent, the nights they spent decreased by 1 percent. Hotels hosted the majority, and Budapest posted the strongest increase at 18 percent, while Tokaj and Nyíregyháza saw a 6 percent decline.
In total, 38,583 tourist accommodations operated in August, including 3,009 commercial facilities — 1,022 hotels and 1,178 guesthouses. The sector’s total gross revenue reached 160.9 billion forints, 14 percent more than a year earlier. Spending with Széchenyi Recreation Cards rose by 3.5 percent to 7.6 billion forints.
For the first eight months of 2025, Hungary registered nearly 13.5 million guests, a 6.2 percent increase compared to last year. Domestic arrivals rose by 1.9 percent to 6.8 million, while international arrivals jumped 11 percent to 6.6 million.
