Hungary’s Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music is to pay tribute to legendary music composer Béla Bartók by holding an international music festival and compeition for composers.

The academy will host the festival in September 2017 to mark the 135th birth anniversary of Bartók, who some regard as one of the finest Hungarian composers that ever lived.

Andrea Vigh, the academy’s director, said that the global event would be the first in a series, involving a competition for composers and a musical symposium.

The competitions will be held in a different category each year. Nominations for the first contest, in the violin category, are welcome before March 26 next year, programme director András Csonka said.

Péter Hoppál, state secretary for culture, said that the government was contributing 160 million HUF to finance the event.
