The central hall at Nyugati railway station will be closed to the public from Friday due to renovation work on the building’s roof.

László Mosóczi, state secretary at the innovation and technology ministry, said the renovation project will take seven months to complete.

MÁV chief, Róbert Homolya said the HUF 9 billion (EUR 25.6m) project involves the reconstruction of 8,200 square meters of roofing, and the replacement of electrical wiring and the passenger information system.

Nyugati, Hungary’s busiest railway station, handles 18 million passengers each year and 480 trains each day. The building had not undergone any major reconstruction for the past 40 years. The Eiffel company in Paris designed the iconic railway station which opened in 1877.
