One of Hungary’s best swimmers has announced his retirement from the sport.
Olympic, world and European champion Dániel Gyurta announced on Tuesday that he has retired from professional competition.
“It is perhaps one of the toughest moments in my life, but I had to realize that I can no longer surmount the many difficulties I have had to face recently,” he said.
Gyurta won gold in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2012 Olympics, three golds at the world championships and also secured two European titles during his career.
The swimmer will remain a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and will continue his links with swimming but ruled out becoming a coach.
