A suspected people smuggler broke through the Hungary-Austria border in his van on Monday, after which gunshots were fired by the suspect at Austrian border authorities.
According to reports, nobody was injured in the shooting incident which happened at the Szentpéterfa-Eberau crossing station. Local Hungarian police have mounted a search for the suspect with the involvement of counterterrorism police. A spokesperson said that earlier on Monday the police had stopped a van driven by a Moldovan people smuggler with 14 Syrian migrants but there was “no direct link” between the two cases.
