PfE calls for investigative committee in connection with corruption allegations of former commissioner

The European Parliament’s Patriots for Europe (PfE) group is calling for an investigative committee to be set up in connection with the corruption allegations around Didier Reynders.

Csaba Dömötör, an MEP of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz, said in Strasbourg on Wednesday that the European Parliament’s Patriots for Europe (PfE) group is calling for an investigative committee to be set up in connection with the corruption allegations around Didier Reynders, the former justice commissioner.

Speaking to Hungarian reporters after an EP debate on corruption allegations in the public sector, Dömötör noted that Reynders was suspected of money laundering. He said the former commissioner had for years given "lectures on the rule of law and the prevention of corruption", but was now accused of having laundered approximately 1 million euros.

Dömötör said the PfE group had initiated a debate on the matter which had been blocked by "the coalition of the European People’s Party and the left". He said they had also blocked an EP resolution on the matter.

The MEP said that if the EPP had not joined forces with the left-wing groups, the corruption case could have been added to the agenda.
