PM Orbán: Hungarian families should not have to pay the price of Ukraine's EU accession

The prime minister said in a video statement uploaded to Facebook that the EC proposal would "bankrupt Europe" and put an "unbearable burden" on families.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Thursday that the European Commission's president is waging a "frontal attack" on Hungary and Central Europe by trying to ban Hungary from buying cheap Russian gas and oil.

PM Orbán said in a video statement uploaded to Facebook that the EC proposal would "bankrupt Europe" and put an "unbearable burden" on families.

Gas supplies "are an economic issue, not a political one", he said, adding that Hungarian households would end up paying twice or 2.5 times the current price overnight.

"This is the Brussels surcharge," he said, adding that his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico, had also taken a stand against the EC plan.

PM Orbán said Hungarian families should not have to pay the price of Ukraine's EU accession.
