Prime Minister Orbán signs government decree to further protect Hungary’s southern borders

“The Ukrainian war threatens not only our economy but also our security,” PM Orbán said. Therefore, “the government has decided to reinforce Hungary’s southern borders.”

One of the consequences of the war in Ukraine is the food crisis in Africa. “We are thus expecting enhanced migration pressure at Hungary’s southern borders,” the prime minister pointed out in a video message published on Facebook.

He stressed that the number of illegal border-crossers has already increased, with even armed clashes resulting in fatalities on the Serbian side. The Hungarian government has therefore decided to reinforce the southern borders by training 2,200 border rangers to help protect Hungarians living there, he said, adding that their number will later increase to 4,000.
