Zoltán Kovács: Hungary’s pro-peace stance irks European Parliament

Hungary’s State Secretary for International Communication, Zoltán Kovács, has accused the European Parliament of targeting Hungary once more, this time to prevent it from assuming the EU presidency in the second half of 2024.

Hungary’s pro-peace stance has irked the European Parliament once again. In a press release issued by Hungary’s State Secretary for International Communication, Zoltán Kovács, he accused the European Parliament of targeting Hungary once more, this time to prevent it from assuming the EU presidency in the second half of 2024. The justification given is that Hungary violates the EU’s basic principles and is hence unable to hold the presidency. However, Kovács believes that the actual reason is that “they dislike Hungary’s pro-peace stance and seek to drive us into conflict.”

Hungary is a full EU member and has already held the rotating chair of the European Council, Kovács reminded. It will do so again in 2024, as, according to him, the Hungarian government is making good progress in its preparations for the EU Presidency and wants to discuss critical subjects that pro-immigration forces do not want on the table, such as Europe’s demographic concerns and family policy, rather than migration.

Kovács added that “the Hungarian government is not capitulating to pressure, and we remain firm in our stance. This has been obvious since the beginning of the war: Hungary is asking for peace and an immediate end of hostilities since it is the only way to preserve human lives.”
