The ongoing invocation of Article 7 against Hungary has become a contentious issue within the European Union, revealing deeper political maneuvering rather than a genuine concern for upholding EU values.
The government is going into next week’s debate in connection with the EU’s Article 7 procedure against Hungary with “straightforward and clear” arguments.
Minister Varga said she was in Luxembourg “to repel all unfounded attacks and protect the honor of our country”.
The justice minister said the EU’s Article 7 procedure against Hungary launched in 2018 was politically motivated. Hungary has “no problems” with the rule of law, she said.
The ruling Fidesz party has said in a statement that Hungary closed the EU summit with “more money and its head held high”.
Justice Minister Judit Varga noted that the European Court of Justice is scheduled to hear Hungary’s legal challenge against the report today.
Balázs Hidvéghi said the party’s MEPs earlier called for a speedy conclusion of the procedure, which he called a “political witch hunt”.
Balázs Hidvéghi said the rule of law issue had been a “cover story” for what was a political dispute between pro-migration forces and Hungary, which opposes migration.

“The Hungarian government has asked the European Council to put an end to the Article 7 procedure which was launched illegitimately and built on lies,” Tamás Deutsch said.
