Hungary is the first country in Europe to hold a referendum on child protection, which is a critical national issue.
Economic stimulus, protection against the pandemic and a national referendum on the new child protection law are the main issues for 2022.
Brussels wants to have Hungary scrap its law, which was adopted last summer, by launching an infringement procedure.
The motion was passed by pro-government lawmakers and several independents, while the opposition boycotted the vote.
“The government’s position is clear: everyone should participate in the referendum on the child protection law and answer ‘no’ to all four questions,” Antal Rogán said.
Hungary stands by its “consistent” stance that EU institutions should not overstep their competencies laid down in the fundamental treaties.
"The law does not interfere in the life of adults in any way, it does not violate the rights of sexual minorities in any way,” Minister Varga said.
The Hungarian people will decide on the issue of child protection in a referendum, not Brussels.
Hungary will be the first country in Europe where the people will get to decide who should have a say in the sex education of children.
The justice minister said the government has responded to indecent attacks, as well as to the Rule of Law Report of the Commission.
Citing Hungary’s constitution, Gulyás said “human dignity is inviolable.” It is the state’s constitutional obligation to perform the tasks of child protection.
